As he paddled the flat water below the Sang Run bridge, Bob thought the river might be a big practical joke. He had heard the stories of boats being ruined and boaters leaving the river bruised, but all he saw ahead of him was a collection of tiny riffles. He was sure he would be sworn to secrecy to uphold the “legend” of Upper Yough.
He got into boating through his parents, paddling fold boats on the Delaware and upstate New York. By the early 1960’s, he got into racing. Slalom racing was still how the sport was organized, and it was Bob’s reputation as a great racer that got him hired as a guide in Ohiopyle. He traveled the slalom circuits in the 1970s, winning races and pushing himself. He also provided color commentary for the the 1979 Slalom Worlds in Jonquiere, Quebec.
